About Us

The Grand Staircase-Escalante Inter-Tribal Coalition (GSEITC) is a coalition of Tribal Nations that works collectively to ensure Tribal voices, perspectives, and priorities are meaningfully included in the management of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM), and to advocate for the long-term protection of the Monument for present and future generations.

GSEITC is composed of representatives from the Hopi Tribe, Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, Navajo Nation, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and the Zuni Tribe. Our shared vision extends beyond individual Tribal interests to embrace a collective responsibility for the protection, stewardship, and well-being of the GSENM landscape.

Why the Monument Matters to Tribal Nations

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument comprises part of the ancestral homelands of multiple Tribal Nations. The current homelands of the Southern Paiute people border the Monument. Many Tribal Nations maintain deep cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial connections to this landscape.

Our relationship to the Monument is not only historical, it is living and ongoing. Tribal citizens continue to hunt, gather, visit sacred places, and conduct ceremonies connected to this land. These practices strengthen cultural persistence and reflect Tribal responsibilities to care for ancestral places and to pass knowledge, traditions, and stewardship responsibilities to future generations.
